Toronto LG Fashion Week welcomed a new local designer to showcase a spring/summer collection.

“It’s refreshing to see some new designers showing such beautiful clothes,” said industry observer Erica Merchese about up-and-coming Canadian designer Golnaz Ashtiani. “Big labels seem to be running out of things to do.”

Ashtiani launched her line in April, winning the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s New Label Award. The prize earned her $10,000, a chance to design an outfit for Sears and a spread in an upcoming issue of Flare magazine.

During LG Fashion Week, Ashtiani teamed up with Incubator competitor Caitlin Power, a Calgary based designer who is also a new name at the event.

“Out of the four designers in the competition, I think we became the closest friends,” Ashtiani told thedailyplanet.com. “Our collections are completely different and we’re not competing.”

Ashtiani said her collection was inspired by 1960s fashion, specifically Roman Holiday, an Audrey Hepburn film about a princess who falls in love in Rome.

“Even though it's in black and white, I imagined what it would be like in colour with sorbet and gelato shades,” Ashtiani said about her collection’s fruit-ice inspired colour palette.

Ashtiani’s fall/winter 2011 collection is currently carried by TNT boutique in Toronto.

Toronto LG Fashion Week wraps up Friday following runway shows by designers such as Baby Steinberg, Lauren Bagliore, David Dixon and Denis Gagnon.
